It’s going to be okay. Holly tried to tell herself that, over and over again. It didn’t seem to be sinking in. They’d gotten to the hospital in record time, only to be stuck waiting. Holly wasn’t sure what Ken had done or who he’d talked to, but somehow he’d managed to wrangle them straight into an examination room. The nurse had taken Holly’s forms and then conducted a few tests before telling them that the doctor would be with them shortly.

That was nearly two hours ago.

Holly let out a slow breath. “This is a good sign, right?” She tried to give Ken a cheerful smile, but her heart was still shaking. “The fact that they’ve kept us waiting this long? If something was really wrong, they’d be rushing around, shouting orders like on those TV shows with the hot doctors.”

“Right,” Ken said. Which was the most he’d said since they’d gotten here, when he’d talked whoever into giving her this room. After that, he’d lapsed into a pensive silence, clasping her hands tightly as he stared off into the distance.

But he hadn’t left her side. He’d stayed with her every minute. Holly told herself it was just because he needed to protect her. All part of the job.

She wasn’t sure if she believed it. She wasn’t sure if she wanted to.

The door opened, and a tired-looking man with wire-rimmed glasses and a white doctor’s coat entered. “Good afternoon. I’m Dr. Nguyen. Ms. Yee?”

Holly nodded. Her mouth was dry. “Yes.”

“I’m sorry to keep you waiting.” The doctor gave her a weary smile and flipped through her chart. “Okay, good news first. You’re fine. Baby, too,” he said before she could ask. “I know it can be alarming, but it’s not unusual to have some cramping and spotting at this stage of your pregnancy. Particularly if you’re feeling a little stressed. Has that been an issue?”

Holly laughed, though it sounded slightly hysterical. “Just a bit.”

“I’d advise you to try to relax, maybe be a little more diligent about drinking fluids.” Dr. Nguyen nodded to Ken. “Maybe dad here can help you keep an eye on that.”

Holly wasn’t in the right place to process the mix of surprise, alarm, and pleasure that hit her square in the gut at the doctor’s assumption that Ken was her baby’s father. She glanced at him, trying to gauge his reaction, but he’d turned away from her.

“Yeah, sure. I can do that.” Ken wrenched his hand out of her grasp and stood abruptly. “Is that it?”

“That’s it,” the doctor assured them.

“Good. I—” Ken strode over to the door, jerking it open as he headed into the hallway. Holly watched him go, stunned. She could still feel the shadow of his hand gripping hers.

The doctor glanced over his shoulder at the door as he scribbled something in her chart. “First kid?” Behind his glasses, his eyes were kind.

“Um.” Holly was still staring at the door. “Yes.”

Dr. Nguyen nodded. “It’s not usual for new dads to take these things a little harder.
